I have just spent the better part of a month slowly watching my way through
Samurai Champloo. I watched the beginning back in the day when it was coming out, but wasn't sure I'd ever finished it and noticed it was on Crunchyroll, so I figured I'd watch again from the beginning. I feel like it's one of those shows that's great to watch one episode a day instead of marathon-ing all at once, because you get that 'tales told over the campfire' feeling; it's episodic in a way that makes that work, but also has enough of an arc to make watching to the end worth it. I did watch the final three-parter all in one night, though. It's good! Some of the things about it that I found extra cool in the mid-00s were actually annoying to me now, but overall I found the balance of personalities in Fuu, Mugen and Jin, and the varying different ways they interacted with each other and the people they met to be pretty entertaining. And it is beautifully animated. I've still got the opening theme song stuck in my head.

I've also been watching in an insane marathon this week
Moriarty the Patriot, though I've not yet finished it. Insane business! People told me it was good years ago, and sometimes it is very good (though I find it uneven), but people forgot to mention how deeply unhinged it is in the best way possible. The flashbacks in episodes two and three where
( Read more... )? Wow, that's the stuff. The way it's framed almost like a seduction into the dark world he'd been looking for... I also enjoy how it does Holmes and Watson. First of all, Watson is adorable?! Second of all, that episode with Sherlock and middle Moriarty flirting outrageously on a train over a murder, and the baby brother real mad about it? Delightful! I would say that my main complaint is that there's less actual Moriarty in this than I was hoping for. I was all in on William James Moriarty within the first few episodes, and there's a lot of episodes where he's just a side character or doesn't show up, and eh. There's also some moments where the shonen-y-ness of it all gets in the way of the vibe. So overall it's kind of uneven, but the cat and mouse games and the idealistic serial killer family are so entertaining.
ETA well, I finished all of the Moriarty anime, and that was fun! Vibrantly homoerotic take on the final problem, the first OVA episode that came after with the painter also vibrantly homoerotic (you cannot convince the painter and the nobleman were not shacked up). Uneven and not without flaw, but I had a good time.
